Global Girlfriend-A Case Study in Good Shopping

I hate shopping. I always have. I can do it for awhile, but then I get that glazed look in my eye and start snapping. I’ve reached the point where I must covenant with myself to not shop while visiting other countries, because I turn into a monster who drives my friends crazy.

Ironic, then, that being faithful to the things God is putting on my heart means researching and writing about good shopping practices. God certainly has a sense of humor.

All that said, the material point is: when it comes to ethical shopping, which takes more effort than the normal kind, if I can do it, you can do it. You might even be better than me.

And believe it or not, this week “shopping,” (the kind that involves surfing the web with no credit card in hand) made me smile. It made me smile because thinking about the impact these products are having on the lives of needy women made my soul happy. This all took place at a site I’ve mentioned before, Global Girlfriend. Global Girlfriend’s motto is “Start Small. Dream Big. Change Lives.” It could be my own. What I like about this site is that they sell products that are practical (not just jewelry and scarves), describe the small business that is benefitting from your purchase, and also purchases 1% of a microgrant for small business start-ups in Africa at no cost to you (it’s donated by Camfed’s Seed Money program). Standard shipping is $4.99 in the U.S., and up to $9.99 for International delivery, but if you choose to donate $10 or more to one of the featured needs/projects on their site (such as famine relief in the Horn of Africa) the U.S. shipping fee is waived.

This picture shows an organic cotton shirt hand-made by women who have been rescued from sex trafficking in Calcutta, India. According to Global Girlfriend, image“these women artisans earn a living wage and have the opportunity to become literate. They lead by example, becoming role models for their daughters and breaking the cycle of poverty.” In a scenario where children of prostitutes are so often “grandfathered” into it themselves, this could be the start of a long-term victory for each family. And it’s currently on sale for $14.99. I love a good deal for everyone. See page here.

Visit Global Girlfriend to see what else they have to offer.

Start Small. Dream Big. Change Lives.
